Here are the latest mysteries I’m working on.
This is a roadmap of Princess Anne County from 1930.
It is weird.
Very little of it is typed. Instead, someone painstakingly scribbled place names, stories, dates, and people onto the map.
Many of these names no longer exist. Places I’m trying to track down include:
Starvation Hill
Beggar’s Bridge
Indian Settlement
Red Head Bay
Why does the lush, green southeast corner of Virginia have a Starvation Hill? What happened to the Beggar’s Bridge in Pungo? Was the Indian Settlement in Great Neck plowed underneath a housing development? Was Red Head Bay near False Cape named for a person? Who was it?
But most of all, who owned this map?
